  Black college marketing guru Robert Constant forwarded me this great article on Winston-Salem State’s Bill Hayes working his magic on campus early into his tenure. And by magic, I mean on the grill.

  Hayes brought the groups together for the inaugural Dr. Reginald Sherard Academic Cookout, a three-hour indoor picnic at the Gaines Center. The purpose of the picnic — named after a former player for Hayes who is now a doctor in Goldsboro — is to foster a better relationship between the groups. Hayes hopes it will become an annual tradition.

  I know this is a couple of days late, but Winston-Salem State University has extended the contract of head men’s basketball coach Bobby Collins. With an overall 29-73 record, some fans may think that his retention is a poor investment on the Rams program looking to reestablish dominance in the CIAA.

• Winston-Salem State's Newkirk Transfers to Florida A&M

  Could this be the beginning of the defections for Winston-Salem State football?

  Defensive lineman Josh Newkirk, who was third in tackles at Winston-Salem State this past season, has transferred to Florida A&M.

  Newkirk, who will be a junior this fall, was a two-year starter for the Rams on the defensive line. He started classes at Florida A&M on Wednesday.

  “I wanted to play Division I and that’s why I signed with Winston,” said Newkirk, who is 6-2 and 240 pounds and was a star at Wallace-Rose Hill High School. “I’ll miss my teammates, especially the ones that were on the D-line with me, but I needed to do this.”

  I always wonder when I hear athletes say “I want to play Division I ball,” does that really mean that they wanted to compete at the highest level, or do they want the best opportunity to be scouted for a professional career? Because if we’re being honest, the CIAA has more than held its own in sending talent to the NFL over the last few years, for those that can truly play.

  Still, if this sentiment is shared by more Newkirk’s teammates, new head coach Connell Maynor could have a personnel crisis on his hands come this Fall.

  Winston-Salem State University has named former Fayetteville State offensive coordinator Connell Maynor it’s head football coach. Maynor, a former Ram football player, also served as an offensive coordinator for the AFL championship-winning Philadelphia Soul from 2006-2008.

• Winston-Salem State Coaching Gig is Hottest in Black College Football

  You thought the Tennessee State coaching job was hot with 36 applicants, how about Winston-Salem State checking in with 75 interested candidates?

  “I do know we had about 75 people apply for the job,” Hayes said. “And for the coaches who have called me about the job, all I can say is there’s an impressive amount of talent out there.”

  Among those who have called are Pete Richardson, James Webster, Alvin Wyatt and Mo Forte.

  So for everyone who criticized the Rams’ move back to the CIAA, there sure seems to be a lot of interest from D-I coaches looking for pay and competition at a lower level.

  That, or that many black college coaches are in need of a steady paycheck.

• Winston-Salem State Football Losing Players?

  Great article by John Dell out of the Winston-Salem Journal is laying out the possibility of multiple players leaving the Rams football team and not having to sit out a year at their next stops.

  One thing that could come next is a player exodus. The issue of key players transferring has been just below the surface much of the season, since the university’s announcement that it was stopping its move to Division I.

  Just who might be in demand by Division I programs after WSSU’s 1-10 finish remains to be seen.

  One assistant, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Norfolk State was taking a hard look at three or possible four WSSU players.

  “The vultures are out when it comes to looking at our players now,” the assistant said. “That’s the nature of things because of us going back to the CIAA.”

• Dee Stokes to Resign as Winston-Salem Women's Basketball Coach

  Dee Stokes, head women’s basketball coach at Winston-Salem State University, will resign at the conclusion of the 2009-10 to pursue new career opportunities.

  “God has called me to something greater” Stokes said. “I believe he’s called me to work at a Christian school in administration. That is my path for the future. God has called me away from coaching and that is clear.”

  You have to commend a person courageous enough to have more than one dream in life, and can lean on a spiritual foundation to support it. But with a career 17-69 record at WSSU and a new athletic director on the way in, you could argue that the Lord is smiling on the women’s basketball program as brightly as He is Stokes and her new career path.

  Winston-Salem State has played in a homecoming game for the past two weeks. And the Rams have emerged victors or close to it in each of those games – including today’s homecoming squeaker loss to Hampton.

  So what exactly does it mean for the CIAA-bound Rams? That they will pick up where they left off as a conference powerhouse? The they will be the backbone of WSSU’s athletic resurrection?

  Or, that they would’ve been A-OK as a member of the MEAC?

• Bill Hayes Named Athletic Director at Winston-Salem State

  It took a while, but Bill Hayes has finally made his way back home. Winston-Salem State University Chancellor Donald Reaves today announced to the university trustees and coaches that Hayes would become the university’s athletic director effective January 1.

  His past and his future immediately endear him to Rams alumni and supporters. His record as a football coach at WSSU is without parallel; his success as a black college athletics executive unmatched.

  But will his reintroduction to Ram Land still all of WSSU’s troubled water? There is financial strife and division among the supporters on the botched Division I transition; issues that desperately require immediate attention and even swifter solutions.
