  Just because black colleges are getting their brains beat in by power conference opponents (just the men, at least) doesn’t mean that there aren’t good things happening for the hardest working squads in the mid-majors.

  Here are a few highlights you may have missed this season.

  The Brilliance of Morgan State’s Reggie Holmes – Did you know that Reggie Holmes was the fourth-leading scorer in NCAA Division I? At 24.6 points per game, the senior guard is shooting 34.5 percent from the three point line and is averaging careers highs in free throw shooting (85.6 percent) and steals at 2.1 per contest.

  The Giant-Killing FAMU Lady Rattlers – With wins over in-state rivals and power conference opponents South Florida and the University of Florida, the Lady Rattlers are the standard bearers in the MEAC thus far – men’s or women’s.

  The Upstart Lady Jaguars of Southern University – The Lady Jags are 6-4 on the year, with out -of-conference wins over mid major counterparts Louisiana Lafayette, IUPUI and Nicholls State.

  Xavier University(La.) Among the Greatest NAIA Basketball Programs - The NAIA released a list of its winningest basketball programs, and the Gold Rush and Nuggets were both ranked sixteenth all-time in victories.

  Johnson C. Smith, Virginia State Climb in National Division II Rankings - The Golden Bulls and the Trojans are ranked 18th and 19th respectively in the last USA Today/ESPN women’s basketball national rankings.

  Clark-Atlanta’s Stifling Defense - The Panthers are the second-ranked defense in the nation, limiting opponents to 48.5 points per game, and just 22 percent on three-point shooting.

• How Can Virginia State Convince YOU to Come to a Game?

  There are many positive things going on with Virginia State sports these days. They have a new men’s basketball coach, and recently were lauded as one of the top teams in Division II men’s basketball in average attendance.

  But even with this success, there is alway more that the Trojans program can do to attract your attention.

  So what will it take to get you to come out to a sporting event? Not just football or basketball, but any sport? Feel free to leave your comments below, and they willl be forwarded to acting university COO Robert L. Turner, and athletic director Peggy Davis.

• CIAA Football To Appear on CBS College Sports TV

  Virginia Union will face Virginia State on national television this Fall, courtesy of the CBS College Sports TV package with Division II football.

  The package – the fourth since Division II and CBS College Sports established their partnership to give Division II schools live TV exposure for their football and basketball programs (in addition to live postseason coverage in those and other sports) – is the first to feature both premium-game match-ups and “conference rotation games” that league commissioners help select.

  This is a really big step for D-II black college football, and its not a bad thing that they got a decent inter-state rivalry on the schedule. The only thing that would’ve drawn more anticipation for this kind of exposure is the Inaugural Commemorative Classic between Johnson C. Smith and Livingstone College.

• Former VSU Trojan William Henry Lewis To Be Inducted into College Football Hall of Fame

  When you hear it reported in the news, you might hear William Henry Lewis’ name associated with Amherst College or Harvard, but rest assured, college football’s first African-American all-American player got his start in the CIAA, at Virginia State University.

  And now, he’ll be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

• Virginia State Names George White New Men's Basketball Coach

  George White, a former head coach at the Division III level and assistant at number of Division II schools has been named the new head coach of the Virginia State University men’s basketball program. White comes to Petersburg from Stanford, where he served as director of external relations for the men’s basketball team.

• Virginia State Fires Tony Collins

  This is a prime example of how ambitious boosters can get the right man fired from the right job. Tony Collins, head coach of the Virginia State Trojans men’s basketball team was fired yesterday on the heels of a surprising CIAA Basketball Tournament run and soaring expectations for next season.

• Surprise, Shock and Awe in Black College Football Week 8

  There was a little bit of everything in last weekend’s slate of black college football games. A HUGE surprise out of the CIAA, a shocking shootout between the SWAC and the MEAC, and the continued strength of the SIAC’s premier football program, all made for some memorable homecomings and plenty of excitement and intrigue.

  Who would’ve guessed that the Virginia State Trojans would roll into Virginia Union’s homecoming and leave Richmond with a 14-7 victory? The bigger surprise in their victory was their stout performances on both sides of the ball, as the Trojans limited reigning CIAA Player of the Year Lamar Little to 130 yards passing and 51 yards rushing.

  The win puts the Trojans in second place in the CIAA Eastern Division behind Elizabeth City State, who is undefeated in conference play. The Panthers are all but guaranteed to miss a second-straight appearance in the CIAA championship game, as they will have to win out to have a chance of catching the Vikings.

  Everyone expected the shootout that took place between the Florida A&M Rattlers and the Southern Jaguars, but Curtis Pulley and the Rattlers edged the Jags for the third consecutive time in Baton Rouge with a 52-49 nail-biter. Pulley, who could be the MEAC Player of the Year, was responsible for more than half of the Rattlers total output, rushing for 118 yards, and passing for 172 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass.

  That kind of performance can almost make you forget that SU quarterback Bryant Lee had a tremendous game, throwing for 407 yards and three touchdowns, and leading the Jags in rushing with 76 yards.

  While the game matters not in their conference play, it was an emotional roller coaster that took a lot out of both teams as they attempt to keep pace in the MEAC and SWAC championship races.

  And finally, Tuskegee beat Albany State 33-20 in the SIAC’s Game of the Year. You wouldn’t know from the final score that the Golden Tigers needed two scores in less than five second to secure the win, but both teams showed that the standings don’t lie.

  Tuskegee has won 23 consecutive games for a reason, mostly with talent, but more with luck last Saturday. That’s not to knock Willie Slater and his team, but they’ve been played close a lot this season. Albany State QB Kisan Flakes did all he could do with 229 yards of total offense and two touchdowns, but inevitable has been the Golden Tigers motto for the last two years.

  And its a motto that hasn’t failed them yet.
