New Day For UMES Basketball?

Three games is hardly enough to consider a program on the come up, but we are talking about the University of Maryland Eastern Shore; a squad that in previous years would’ve held up holy hands for the label of ‘mediocre.’But the 2009 edition of the Fighting Hawks might have found basketball religion, and may be close to winning some converts in Princess Anne and beyond. UMES has won their last three games – American and Navy for the comparable out-of-conference variety, and for good measure, a conference win against Delaware State.

University of Maryland - Eastern Shore Joins the Eastern College Athletic Conference

The University of Maryland-Eastern Shore has been voted into the Eastern College Athletic Association; a multi-divisional conference that fields championships in 37 men’s and women’s sports. The Hawks will still participate in MEAC competition, but will also compete in the ECAC as a secondary membership.

UMES' Maria Rodriguez Rolls Perfect Game

You don’t see one everyday, but the the NCAA Women’s Bowling national champions of two seasons ago can add another distinguished accomplishment to their trophy case.
Junior Maria Rodriguez, competing for the Colombian National Team in the recent World Women’s Championships bowled a perfect game, just the fourth in the history in the event.

Former UMES Football Standout Roger Brown Elected to College Football Hall of Fame

Roger Brown, a legendary defensive tackle for the then Maryland State College Fighting Hawks has been named to the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame. Brown starred for a Hawks team that had one of the dominant defensive stretches in black college sports history. Between 1956-59, Brown and the Hawks won a CIAA title (57′), and outscored opponents 693-213. Brown went on to a great career in the NFL with the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams.

Black Colleges Not Making the NCAA APR Grade

We’ve celebrated those institutions demonstrating academic improvement, and now it’s time to call out those institutions with athletes not getting it done in the classroom. The following is the list of black colleges not meeting the standard of academic proficiency in keeping with the NCAA’s academic progress rate (APR).
The formula is based on academic eligibility of student athletes, retention, and graduation rate, along with other factors. Below are the institutions cited for poor performance, and any penalties assigned.

UMES Adds Men's Golf

While some programs are dumping valuable sports teams (looking in the general direction of Delaware State), the University of Maryland – Eastern Shore is adding men’s golf to its athletic profile. The team will be set for spring competition in 2010.
Now, if the Fighting Hawks could only get the ball rolling to bring football back to Princess Anne…
