Monte Coleman doesn’t appear to be very satisfied with his 5-5 finish this past season. In the hours following Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s season-ending loss to Texas Southern, Coleman showed his offensive coordinator, offensive and defensive line and linebacker coaches the door.

And now, the quarterbacks coach Winston Delaney is out in the cold as well.

Delaney, a former UAPB quarterback who joined the staff in 2008, confirmed on Wednesday night that Coleman relieved him of his duties when he returned to J. Thomas May Field House following the staff’s two week break for the holidays.

“I went to him, since we came back, he hadn’t hired an offensive coordinator yet, I just wanted to know ‘Where are you headed?,’” Delaney said. “He said he wanted the coordinator to coach the quarterbacks.”

We’re into Day 2 of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, and we’ve already had significant movement among the black college baseball ranks. Let’s take a look at some of the stars baseball players coming out of historically black colleges and universities.

    Boston Red Sox

Michael Thomas – Catcher – Southern University - Taken 378th overall, a broken hand limited Thomas to just 18 regular season contests for the SWAC champions. Thomas was named to the 2009 all-SWAC second team, and finished his season with a .448 on-base-percentage and recorded 86 putouts for the Jaguars.

    Oakland Athletics

Myrio Richard – Center Fielder – Prairie View A&M University - Richard, a 2009 second-team all-SWAC selection, was taken by the Athletics with the 273rd overall pick. Richard led the Panthers in runs scored, home runs and stolen bases.

Anthione Shaw – Shortstop – St. Augustine’s College – The CIAA Player of the Year was among the national leaders in batting average, runs per game and on-base percentage in 2009.

    Seattle Mariners

Eric Thomas – Pitcher – Bethune-Cookman University – An unherladed member of the Wildcats starting rotation, Thomas was a second-team all-MEAC selection in 2009 and ranked third and second in the conference in strikeouts and wins, respectively.

    Chicago Cubs

Charles Thomas – Third Base – Edward Waters College - Thomas led the EWC Tigers in slugging percentage, games played, home runs and RBI.

    Colorado Rockies

Jeffrey Squier – Shortstop – Mississippi Valley State University – With the 421st selection, the Colorado Rockies selected the Colorado native and first-team all-SWAC shortstop. Squier led the Devils with a .352 batting average, and led the conference with 41 stolen bases.

Brandon Whitby – Catcher – Prairie View A&M University - Whitby was a first-team all-conference selection for the Panthers in 2009, and was fourth in the conference in batting average (.373). Whitby led PVAMU in RBI, and showed great patience at the plate with only 25 strikeouts in 153 at-bats.

Dan Perkins – Pitcher – Delaware State University - The MEAC Pitcher of the Year in 2009 was selected with the 811th pick by the Rockies on Day 2. While he posted a 5-5 record on the year, he struck out 86 batters and threw five complete complete games.

    Arizona Diamondbacks

Zac Varnell – Catcher – University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff - Varnell was not an all-conference selection in 2009, but showed a great propensity for advancing runners in clutch situations. He recorded four RBI in two-out scenarios with runners on base during the season for the Golden Lions.

    Milwaukee Brewers

Hiram Burgos – Pitcher – Bethune-Cookman University – Burgos is no stranger to the national spotlight. Burgos was a member of the all-MEAC second team in 2009, posted the third lowest ERA in the MEAC at 3.74 runs per game, and was the conference leader with 94 strikeouts. Burgos was the 196th pick overall.

    St. Louis Cardinals

Christian Beatty – Centerfielder – North Carolina A&T State University – A man of many talents, MEAC first-teamer C.J. Beatty hovered around the lead in a number of offensive categories, including home runs andd batting average. He did lead the Aggies in walks and doubles, and was a power threat.

Andrew Moss – Pitcher – Lincoln University (Mo.) - Moss led the Blue Tigers in wins, ERA and strikeouts in 2009, on his way to making the Heartland Conference first-team.

If you followed the draft, I’m looking to score interviews with some of the drafted players on this week’s edition of HBCU Sports Talk Radio.

Feel free to email me at jarrett@hbcusportsblog.com with any contact info on these players, or any additional comments and questions about the draft.

  • New Look Golden Lions at UAPB?

Interesting stories coming out of the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, as the Golden Lions are tinkering with offense, running with yet-to-be-named defensive coordinators, and lying about off-season weight loss.

    First, the offense:

After utilizing running backs Mickey Dean and Martell Mallett in a more run-orientated offensive attack last season, trying to implement a more spread-orientated style of attack seemed to be a point of emphasis. During team drills, the Golden Lions offense lined up with four receivers.

Four receivers? Who do they think they are? Southern?

    On to the defense:

As well as being head coach last season, Coleman was also the team’s defensive coordinator. It’s a position he’s not sure he’ll keep for the upcoming season, as defensive backs coach Alonzo Hampton was the man handling defensive duties Monday afternoon.

Well, then that settles it. Everybody on the staff can run the defense, cause’ that’s just how UAPB rolls.

And what about the running back situation with Mickey Dean?

Now, Dean looks poised for another big season. While his coach didn’t know how much weight he’s lost this offseason, Coleman acknowledges that he’s lost more weight and even ran a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash last week.

“I don’t know (what he ran in the forty last year), but it wasn’t a 4.5,” Coleman said.

Dean was among the top backs in the conference his freshman year, but good eating took him out of the limelight and good health over the last few seasons. In 2009, Dean will look to reestablish the form that kept him in the conference stats spotlight and his team in contention.

  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff Prep Star's Time To Shine

Now here’s a story you don’t see everyday. A local prep star finds himself recruited by big time college football programs, but receives his only scholarship offer from a historically black college.

The prep star, not being a fool, takes the offer; only to find himself shuffled in and out of the line-up, and settled on the bench behind the eventual SWAC Offensive Player of the Year.

But 2008 is Jonathan Moore’s year to prove himself and the UAPB Golden Lions and a contender for the SWAC championship title. There have been signs of nerves throughout camp for Moore and the Lions’ defense, but they appear to be flourishing under first year head coach Monte Coleman at the right time.

  • SWAC Football Fans Show Up

Unless a hurricane is coming, you can count on SWAC football fans showing up at home games.

In the 30 years since the introduction of the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-AA), the SWAC led the nation in attendance. Only Hurricane Katrina stopped it from being 30 straight seasons, and I’m willing to bet there were a few blue and gold and black and gold rafts on the rising waters during that tumultuous time.

In total, the SWAC placed five teams in the nation’s top 30 schools for attendance, with Southern and Jackson State placing in the top 20. The University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff and Grambling State placed 23rd and 24th, while Alabama State place 26th.

More than 800,000 fans attended SWAC home games in 2007, confirming that if you sell grills, liquor, barbecue sauce or meat products in the Gulf Coast, you’ll be a millionaire in less than two years.
