On last week’s edition of HBCU Sports Talk Radio, I made the case for black college coaches being the end all and be all of any successful program. And that opinion seems to be holding true for Texas Southern basketball, which is among the SWAC leaders this season thanks to the influence of head coach Tony Harvey and assistant coaches former NBAers Nick Van Exel and Vin Baker.

Black Colleges Competing For Dismissed University of Tennessee Football Robber
JC
Yesterday, we discussed Hampton’s evolving trend of admitting troubled football stars after their dismissal from BCS schools. Their latest charity case, convicted armed robber and dismissed University of Tennessee receiver Nu’Keese Richardson, has enrolled at Hampton and hopes to resurrect his football career by the sea.His partner in crime Mike Edwards? Yeah, HBCUs are checking for him big time, too.
Eight or nine schools are competing for Edwards. He’s due to make his decision in 24 hours. He mentioned Tennessee State, Texas Southern University, Eastern Kentucky University and Grambling State University.

More on Texas Southern and Alumni Giving
JC
So if you’re a follower of TSPN Sports, you’ve probably become aware of a back and forth between myself and a few of the loyal posters on their forum. If you haven’t, I invite you to check out the comedy. One of the more vocal and profane responders on the thread was Mr. Christopher LeBlanc, president of the Texas Southern University National Alumni Association. Taking issue with yesterday’s post on why TSU alumni should be ashamed of such low giving for an athletic fundraiser, he invited me to call him and talk about it.
I took him up on his offer. This is what came out of it.

Texas Southern Alumni Ought to Be Ashamed
JC
By way of Houston, their family stretches to the dream-laden streets of Los Angeles to the powerful concrete corridors of Washington D.C. These are the twelve alumni chapters of Texas Southern University; which if you believe their website, are committed to the preserving and promoting the prestige of Texas Southern University.Except, there’s nothing prestigious about their apathy towards their own athletic programs. In fact, it’s downright disgraceful.

Nick Van Exel Named Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Texas Southern
JC

Remember Nick Van Exel? There was a time where he was legitimately in the discussion for best point guard in the NBA.
Now, he’s surpassed Virginia Union’s Anthony Peeler as the best former NBA player coaching at a black college, as Texas Southern University signed the 14-year vet up just under a month ago.

Reintroducing Melvin Spears

Very good read from the Deriso Report on former Grambling coach Melvin Spears; especially if you are somebody still trying to determine if you hate or love the guy. Check the excerpt after the jump.

SWAC Female Official to Work Saturday's Texas Southern Game
JC
Yvonde Lewis, the first female football official in SWAC history, will work her first game this weekend between Texas Southern and Texas College.
One day, we’ll be off of this “first ever” kick and have nothing to mention about racial and gender equity. One day, it will be so commonplace that minorities and women have an opportunity to showcase talent and expertise, that it won’t be exciting any more to see women umpiring, refereeing, and even coaching in the men’s and women’s ranks of college athletics.
But until that day comes, cheers and salutations go out to the SWAC and MEAC for being progressive enough to hire four out of the five active female officials in NCAA Division I football.

Black Colleges Not Making the NCAA APR Grade
JC

We’ve celebrated those institutions demonstrating academic improvement, and now it’s time to call out those institutions with athletes not getting it done in the classroom. The following is the list of black colleges not meeting the standard of academic proficiency in keeping with the NCAA’s academic progress rate (APR).
The formula is based on academic eligibility of student athletes, retention, and graduation rate, along with other factors. Below are the institutions cited for poor performance, and any penalties assigned.

Rutgers Student Sports Editor Blasts Texas Southern Football
JC
It’s true that the 2008 campaign for the Texas Southern football team left much to be desired. They were below .500 for the eighth consecutive year, they lost to an Arkansas State team 83-10 in the second game of the season, and three of their four wins were over non-SWAC opponents.
And yet, this review from Matthew Stein, a sports editor for the Rutgers University Daily Targum student newspaper, still stings. Pretty sharply. Among his venomous comments chastising Rutgers for scheduling TSU in 2009:

Making the Case for the SWAC Basketball Tournament Underdogs
KM
Hello, Coppin State. Are you out there?
Your run to a MEAC championship and into the field of 65 in the NCAA Tournament with 20 losses has inspired Texas Southern, Alabama A&M, Mississippi Valley State and Southern. Even though those programs have a combined 30-88 overall record, they believe it is possible to run the table in the SWAC .
And they have every right to believe it.
