It’s hard to explain why a SWAC school would sign up for games against the Talladega Tornadoes, only to catch the kind of heat and defeat that can burn out a team’s morale heading into conference play. Southern was the latest SWAC school to fall to the reigning USCAA national champions, and it marks the second straight year that the Jaguars have been all caught up in the TC storm.
To the Jaguars’ credit, they did take the Tornadoes to overtime. And made head coach William Brown come down with a case of the Urban Meyer fever.
“I felt like Urban Meyer down the stretch,” Talladega coach William Brown said, referring to the Florida football coach. “My chest got tight.”
Talladega defeated Alabama State, Alabama A&M, Mississippi Valley State, Southern, and Grambling State last season, with the Tigers nearly punking out of the game. At 8-8 this year, they’ve struggle over the last two months, going just 4-6 over their last ten games.
But the Tornadoes have set their sights on a new black college conference to pillage; they are undefeated against the SIAC this year with wins over Tuskegee, Stillman, and a home-away split with Morehouse. If you are looking for a great black college basketball story outside of Tallahassee, the Tornadoes are a great team to believe in.
