  Just because black colleges are getting their brains beat in by power conference opponents (just the men, at least) doesn’t mean that there aren’t good things happening for the hardest working squads in the mid-majors.

  Here are a few highlights you may have missed this season.

  The Brilliance of Morgan State’s Reggie Holmes – Did you know that Reggie Holmes was the fourth-leading scorer in NCAA Division I? At 24.6 points per game, the senior guard is shooting 34.5 percent from the three point line and is averaging careers highs in free throw shooting (85.6 percent) and steals at 2.1 per contest.

  The Giant-Killing FAMU Lady Rattlers – With wins over in-state rivals and power conference opponents South Florida and the University of Florida, the Lady Rattlers are the standard bearers in the MEAC thus far – men’s or women’s.

  The Upstart Lady Jaguars of Southern University – The Lady Jags are 6-4 on the year, with out -of-conference wins over mid major counterparts Louisiana Lafayette, IUPUI and Nicholls State.

  Xavier University(La.) Among the Greatest NAIA Basketball Programs - The NAIA released a list of its winningest basketball programs, and the Gold Rush and Nuggets were both ranked sixteenth all-time in victories.

  Johnson C. Smith, Virginia State Climb in National Division II Rankings - The Golden Bulls and the Trojans are ranked 18th and 19th respectively in the last USA Today/ESPN women’s basketball national rankings.

  Clark-Atlanta’s Stifling Defense - The Panthers are the second-ranked defense in the nation, limiting opponents to 48.5 points per game, and just 22 percent on three-point shooting.

• Black Colleges Impacting Preseason Basketball Polls

  Several HBCUs have been ranked on national preseason basketball polls in both the NCAA and NAIA.

  Tougaloo College and Johnson C. Smith are ranked in the top 25 of the National Association of Basketball Coaches preseason men’s basketball poll. The TC Bulldogs went 22-11 last season, and are ranked 21st on the Association’s Division I NAIA poll. Langston University also received votes, but were 50 points behind 25th-ranked Olivet Nazarene.

  Johnson C. Smith is ranked 19th in the NCAA Division II poll. The Golden Bulls defeated the Virginia Union Panthers in February of this year for their second-consecutive CIAA basketball championship. The Panthers fell 14 points shy of making the top 25, and were joined by the SIAC’s Benedict College, who missed the rankings by 10 points.

  West Virginia State, regular season champs of the WVIAC, also received 14 points in the Division II rankings. The Yellow Jackets, along with the JCSU Golden Bulls, were selected 24th and 23rd respectively  for the Division II Bulletin top 25.

• How Can Johnson C. Smith Convince YOU to Come to a Game?

  The Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls are among the most active athletic programs in the CIAA when it comes to promoting their sports. I receive regular updates from the Golden Bulls Sports Info department over feed reader, and their website is impeccably kept up to date.

  They also have a decent product when it comes to football and basketball. Two straight CIAA Basketball Championships is the headliner, while the football team changed coaches and looks to change cultures this year.

  So how can JCSU convince you to come to a game and support them? Feel free to leave your comments below, and they will be forwarded to university president Dr. Ronald L. Carter and athletic director Steve Joyner.

• National Association of Basketball Coaches to Honor JCSU's Steve Joyner

  Steve Joyner, head coach of the 2009 CIAA basketball champion Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls, will be honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches next month for reaching the 400-win milestone.

  Joyner, whose middle name should be “Division Champ,” has a career-record of 402-235 over 22 seasons at JCSU. And while he still hasn’t gotten back to me about being on the show, he’s still a guy who’s worthy of the attention and the recognition.

• Johnson C. Smith Continues Strong Outdoor Season

• Black Colleges in NCAA Division II National Basketball Tournament

  Several black colleges have been named to the NCAA Division II National Basketball Tournament. Let’s run down the men’s and the women’s seedings.

  Men’s

  From the SIAC, a conference championship didn’t weight heavily on the selection committee, as the LeMoyne-Owen Magicians take the eighth seed in the South region. The teams who would be champions, Claflin University and Benedict College, receive third and fifth seeds, respectively. If the two teams win their opening rounds, they could face each other for the third time this season in the Sweet 16.

  The CIAA sends its conference champion and runner-up to the national tournament in the Atlantic region. The Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls get a fourth seed in the tournament, but the three-time national champion Virginia Union Panthers come in as the second seed. Pretty surprising considering JCSU repeated this year as CIAA basketball champions.

  West Virginia State, regular season champs out of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, receive the sixth seed. The Yellow Jackets will face the winner of the VUU-Indiana(Pa.) game with a first round win against three-seed Kutztown.

  Women’s

  SIAC champion Fort Valley State and runner-up Clark-Atlanta come into the national tournament as a second and sixth seeds in the South region. The Lady Wildcats went undefeated in SIAC play this season, and Clark-Atlanta lost just two games in conference.

  The UDC Firebirds receive an eighth-seed at-large bid to the national tournament after an impressive season. The Division II independents played a CIAA-heavy schedule, and their only loss against CIAA competition was a road defeat at the hands of Chowan College in early February.

  The CIAA sends conference champion Johnson C. Smith to the tournament as a seventh-seed, and the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos, who lost in the first round of the CIAA Basketball Tournament, come in as a sixth seed.

• Johnson C. Smith Wins 2009 CIAA Basketball Tournament

  About the only thing Johnson C. Smith University didn’t take from the CIAA Basketball Tournament was the identity of Mr. CIAA’s tailor. The Golden Bulls won the women’s championship, the men’s championship,  a number of individual accolades, and the hearts of basketball fans everywhere.

• Johnson C. Smith is Golden in CIAA Basketball Tournament

  It was the ladies first, and the men followed up just minutes ago. Johnson C. Smith will appear in the championship game of the CIAA Basketball Tournament in both the men’s and women’s bracket.

  That’s the mark of a healthy basketball program. Good recruiting and solid coaching down the line for the men and women indicates a positive foundation from the athletic director on down. The coaches can sell the university’s experience, and the players can embrace the philosophy on the court and off.

  Kudos to the Golden Bulls.

• Johnson C. Smith Reigns Supreme in Weekly CIAA Basketball Honors

  Steve Joyner and Ryan Scott were named CIAA Coach and Player of the Week for the third time this season. JCSU is the Western Division leader in the CIAA with an 18-7 overall record and a perfect 7-0 mark in divisional play. The Golden Bulls are ranked seventh in the Division II Atlantic regional rankings.
