HBCU Sports Blog Black College Football Poll - Week 9
JC
While I missed delivery on yesterday’s 11 p.m. promise of the poll results, I have made good on last week’s promise of updating the value system for the HBCU Sports Blog Black College Football Poll. We still have the same categories (Margin of Victory, Road Wins, In-Conference Wins, Out-of-Conference Wins, Out-of-Division Wins, Overall Record), but we no longer have points being deducted for the losses.
In addition, each category is weighted differently, and added up to yield a final point total that encompasses the entire season of work. And to solve the pesky head-to-head problem, a team earns a full percentage point for every team in the current top ten they’ve defeated over the course of the season.

Division I
1. Alabama State – 55 Points A heavy out-of-conference schedule has vaulted the Hornets into the number one spot this week. HBCU Sports Blog Black College Football Poll - Week 2
JC
With a full slate of black college football games in the books, black college football polls are now in full swing. Historically, I’ve been against them. I’m against Division I and II schools being lumped together, I’m against ignorant SIDs, coaches and reporters feeding into regional bias when they vote.
And then I thought, I can either keep using this space to hate on the polls, or do something productive to offset the bias.
So for the sake of fans who love black college football, but have always had a problem with questionable rankings in the polls, I present to you the first HBCU Sports Blog Black College Football Poll. To be released on or about Monday night every week throughout the black college football season, I’ve attempted to create some order and reason beyond the teams we think are better than others.
This week’s rankings are based off of the original poll rankings in the HBCU Sports Blog Power Rankings, which are also based off of quantifiable data that equates to the health of a black college football program. Every week, teams will accumulate points based off of several performance-based factors:
Margin of Victory – Teams will receive five points for every ten points in their margin of victory. (20 point victory = 10 M.O.V points)
Road Wins – If a team wins on the road, that team will receive five points. If you are at home, you are supposed to win, so no credit there.
In-Conference Win – If a team wins a conference game, it’s one more step to making a conference championship. Five points for the victory, no matter if its on the road or at home.
Out-of-Conference Win - If your team beats an opponent outside of their conference, which requires a lot more preparation and discipline, ten points for an out-of-conference victory.
Out-of-Division Win – If your team wins against a lower Division school, five points for the cupcake. If they beat a higher division school, ten points for the huge win.
Season Losses – Ten points are deducted for every loss on the season. Teams that lost this week have a cumulative score of zero.
Scores accumulate from week to week, so that you, the fan, have a clear indication of how your team is progressing through the season, and how they earned their spot on the poll. No bias, no arguments; just the stats.
As I have said about the power rankings, this isn’t a perfect system by any means. If you have a perfect system, or one that is better than this, please feel free to email me at jarrett-at-hbcusportsblog-dot-com.
And now, the Week 2 HBCU Sports Blog Black College Football Poll standings.
