Rod Broadway, head football coach of Grambling State University is a potential candidate for the vacant East Carolina head coaching job, according to the Deriso Report.
Broadway has flirted with leaving the FCS program at Grambling before, interviewing with Duke and being linked to the coaching search at Florida A&M. He’s not the only coach on ECU’s wish list, however. Other names circulating include Temple’s Al Golden and Middle Tennessee’s Rick Stockstill.
Yesterday, we discussed Hampton’s evolving trend of admitting troubled football stars after their dismissal from BCS schools. Their latest charity case, convicted armed robber and dismissed University of Tennessee receiver Nu’Keese Richardson, has enrolled at Hampton and hopes to resurrect his football career by the sea.
His partner in crime Mike Edwards? Yeah, HBCUs are checking for him big time, too.
Eight or nine schools are competing for Edwards. He’s due to make his decision in 24 hours. He mentioned Tennessee State, Texas Southern University, Eastern Kentucky University and Grambling State University.
That seems to be the sentiment of Grambling blogger Nick Deriso, but considering his allegiances, I wouldn’t be surprised if this a preemptive stoking of the flames. After all, Southern is chasing down the most famous Grambling Tiger not named Eddie Robinson.
Grambling legend Doug Williams says he didn’t talk numbers in a weekend interview with Southern, but many believe he discussed job responsibilities that go far beyond coaching at GSU’s hated in-state SWAC rival.
Williams met not with the athletics director at Southern, but with Tony Clayton, chairman of the Southern board of supervisors and Cleo Fields, a Baton Rouge lawyer and former member of the Louisiana House of Representatives.That certainly suggests two things:
– There is a serious effort to lure Williams, despite his own efforts to downplay things.
– Perhaps the athletics director job itself is on the table.
First, this firing is something much deeper than the Tigers receiving corp and a perceived lack of production out of the unit. Sure, GSU had the second worst passing offense in the conference in 2009, but had the third most passing touchdowns with 14 and the sixth fewest interceptions with 11. Besides, their inability to pass seems more of a product of Greg Dillon running for his life on three out of every four plays than the receivers lack of acumen on the field.

I’ve gotten a few emails over the weekend about the Bayou Classic, most folks asking why I didn’t jump all over it this weekend. Between going to buy a new car and spending a great Thanksgiving with my wife and new baby, my coverage of the Classic was limited with explanation.
But I am interested in finding out from those who went, or those who watched it, was it the same Bayou Classic from year’s past? With no meaningful divisional or championship ramifications, was the party and the purpose of the Bayou Classic still the same?
In case you missed it this morning, Grambling State University basketball was featured on ESPN’s ‘Outside the Lines’ with a report on the death of Tiger player Henry White this past summer.
Very interesting article out of the Advocate on the tenuous saga of the Southern University System Foundation and its management of the Bayou Classic. Tales of misappropriation, unpaid bills and personal vendettas have apparently been playing out against the backdrop of the nation’s signature black college football classic, and may cause significantly bad press for the event in the coming months.
The fight is for authority over the private, nonprofit Southern University System Foundation, which oversees much of the Bayou Classic and the university’s fundraising. It’s a confusing power struggle that pits various factions within the university’s community and soon could play out in court.
Stories about Southern University and money or the lack thereof have become commonplace in the last few weeks. What exactly is happening where SU is having so much trouble collecting funds on time? With a marketing monster like the Bayou Classic, it’s possible that there are so many revenue streams flowing to and through the event, that it is impossible to negotiate who tracks what without egos getting in the way.
Or thieving. After all, it takes a pretty big ego to skim off the top of a multi-million dollar enterprise.
I certainly wouldn’t classify Grambling’s season as a failure, and I doubt most people outside of the program would. But it appears that we all would have a hard time convincing GSU head coach Rod Broadway of that sentiment.
“We’re just trying to win a ballgame,” Broadway said. “We’d like to finish this thing out strong. We want to play better and play with more pride. We’re totally disappointed where we are as a football team and as a football program right now.”
