Courtesy of Sherrell McMillan, here is the new “anthem” for Fayetteville State University. Feel free to get your American Idol on in the comments, but I think it will inspire the school pride for which it was created.

State of the Black College Athletic Department - The Art of Storytelling
JC
Jamel Carpenter is the leading scorer in the CIAA, and the heart and soul of the 4-8 Fayetteville State Broncos. I could’ve looked up his stats on the FSU athletics web page, or gleaned it from weekly releases from the CIAA. But I didn’t have to.
Because FSU sports information wrote it up and sent it to me.
This is a principle we’ve discussed time and time again – how to leverage sports to become community athletic brands beyond campus borders. It’s one thing for fans to want to know about the schedule, or to know what the record and stats for teams are. But isn’t it a rewarding benefit for fans, alumni and supporters to be able to learn about the student athletes living and playing for alma mater?

Alphonza Kee Infusing Discipline Into Fayetteville State Basketball
JC
So there’s two ways this can go for Alphonza Kee and his Fayetteville State Broncos men’s basketball program; they can be men and buy into the new direction, or create controversy and shut down on him.The Broncos have a curfew now – everyone in their rooms by midnight. There’s mandatory study hall that some players have to attend twice daily and the six-minute mile time everyone had to post before they’d be allowed to start preseason practice.
And every day when they arrive at Capel Arena for practice, they’re greeting by a schedule on the locker room door detailing to the minute the areas of emphasis for that workout.

Fayetteville State Wins 2009 CIAA Football Championship
JC
It’s no surprise that Fayettevile State reached the CIAA championship game or even that they emerged from Durham as 21-10 victors over Bowie State. What is surprising is that a quarterback who hadn’t played in the second half of the season came into the second-half of the game to lead the Broncos to victory.
There are a few ways you can describe Kenny Phillips’ decision to bring in junior Benjamin Williams for the second half of the championship game after benching him for the entire second half of the regular season. Nonsensical, sporadic and unexpected are a few the ones that immediately come to mind.
But in the end, Williams’ six completions, 87 yards and one touchdown pass validated Phillips’ move, and gave the Broncos a spark against a vaunted Bowie State defense. The Bulldog offense, which had ground out so many close victories over the course of the season, was ineffective in the second half, and gave away two turnovers that led to two second half touchdowns.
Now for the big question: who will Phillips start at quarterback in the playoffs, where the Broncos will face the California (Pa.) in the opening round of the Division II playoffs?

Fayetteville State's CIAA Championship Flyer
JC
Uh oh. They are putting up flyers in the ‘Ville. There’s no doubt that, next to a possible Prairie View SWAC championship appearance, the CIAA will be the most compelling black college football championship of the year.
After all, the flyer done told you so.

CIAA East Hangs in the Balance

How fitting that representation from the CIAA East in the conference championship game will come down to Virginia Union and Bowie State – two teams picked to finish fifth and seventh respectively in the preseason conference predictions.

Long Road Ahead for Fayetteville State Football
JC
At the start of the season, I was worried that the Fayetteville State Broncos were not going to live up to the preseason hype of the summer. The team had dropped two straight out of conference nailbiters to UNC-Pembroke and Catawba, and didn’t appear to be the offensive juggernaut that would contend with Shaw for the 2009 CIAA football crown.
And nearly at the midpoint of the season, the Broncos haven’t shown the kind of consistency that makes you believe their season will progress with championship aspirations.

Medlin to Miss Fayetteville State Season Opener
JC
Richard Medlin, an all-CIAA kick returner and best returning running back, will miss the season opener for the Fayetteville State Broncos this Saturday against UNC-Pembroke. Medlin will serve a one-game suspension for fighting in last season’s finale against Livingstone College.“We knew (the suspension) was a 50-50 chance, so we’ve been working some guys here and there that have been in camp,” Phillips said at a press conference for both teams’ coaches inside Capel Arena. “This is just another opportunity for a young man to step up and show what he can do as a football player.”

Why Are People Scared to Pick Shaw?
JC
D2Football.com just released its picks for the 2009 season, and similar to the clueless coaches in the CIAA, the Bears were picked to finish second to Fayetteville State.
Last time I checked, Shaw has won two championships back-to-back. Fayetteville State may have the better head-to-head record over the last few years, but there’s only one team that held the Broncos to fewer than 20 points in a game last season.
Yep. Those Bears.
Maybe it’s the whole “playing games at a high school” thing, because I genuinely don’t get how experts are downgrading Shaw. The majority of their players are back, and they’ve added former Grambling quarterback Brandon Landers to the mix.
Maybe these journalism outlets are too lazy to look into the facts and figures of the teams they are ranking. Surely they would’ve recognized that the Bears’ biggest loss was defensive tackle Louis Ellis, and not much else.
No disrespect to the Broncos, of course. I believe that FSU will again be in contention for the championship deep into the season. But what more can the Bears do, aside from building a football stadium on campus, to convince people that they are for real?
