• The Miracle at Alcorn State University

  Around this time last season, would you have guessed that the Alcorn State Braves would be in position to advance to the 2009 SWAC football championship? Entire coaching staffs being fired on Thanksgiving Day without the head coach’s knowledge, lawsuits, rehirings, and more firing.

  Alcorn State was the laughing stock of college football.

  But the drama has not deterred the new-look Braves under first year head coach Ernest Collins. Needing a win in the Capital City Classic against Jackson State and some help from Alabama A&M, the Braves are in position to win a Eastern division title and to secure a match-up with Prairie View in the SWAC Championship game.

• Alcorn State Finally Catches a Break, FCS Sack Record

  Maybe it was the last remnants of the Darren Hamilton curse on the Alcorn State athletic program, but it was beginning to look like nothing would go the Braves way this season. They were outscored in the first two games of the season 100-0, lost a close one on the road against Southern, and had a game canceled due to lightning.

  So you have to imagine that the Braves had a lot of stored frustration they wanted to get out in their home opener against Mississippi Valley State University. And did they ever, setting an FCS record with 14-sacks in a 32-10 win over the rival Delta Devils.

• Lamonte Massie Resigns as Livingstone Football Coach

  Lamonte Massie resigned yesterday as head coach of the Livingstone Blue Bears, but will remain with the college in another capacity. He will be replaced by assistant head coach Eric Brown on an interim basis.

  They are 0-4 on the season, and are last in nearly every major statistical category in the CIAA. If there ever was a reason for a head coach to quit in the middle of the season, getting the Bears on a better track to success before the start of next season would be a good one.

  Interestingly enough, Livingstone Athletic Director Darren Hamilton’s name wasn’t mentioned in the story. For someone known to force coaches out, I’m really surprised he had no comment in the matter.

  *UPDATE* – Of course, when it comes to Hamilton, you run the risk of speaking too soon.

• Brenda Square Named Alcorn State Interim Athletic Director

  With all of her experience, and none of the drama, makes you wonder why Alcorn State didn’t hire Brenda Square to be the athletic director in the first place. Hopefully, the university will do the right thing and remove the interim tag sooner than later, because she is the ideal person for this job at this moment.

• The Darren Hamilton Destruction Tour Heads to Livingstone College

  I first learned about this breaking story this morning while doing the show, and I feel sicker about it now then I did just a few hours ago. Dr. Darren Hamilton will resign his position as Alcorn State’s director of athletics to accept the same job at Livingstone College.

• Jackson State Football Still Searching For 11th Game

  Jackson State has been trying to add an 11th football game to its 2009 schedule for a while now, and it appears that Alcorn State is the key to that game finding a place. Two open dates in late September and late October would have to be be the destination for such a game, and it would involve the Capital City Classic being moved to the week of Thanksgiving.

  Interestingly enough, Alcorn State athletic director Darren Hamilton can’t make any comments on the possible move or anything football related, due to a pending lawsuit from former Braves’ head football coach Ernest Jones against Hamilton and the university.

• Earnest Collins Named Head Football Coach at Alcorn State University

  In the continuing saga that is Alcorn State football, the university has announced that formerly-fired assistant Earnest Collins has been named head coach. Terms of the one-year deal were not disclosed.

  The mess just keeps on getting messier at this school, and there’s really no accountability for it. Darren Hamilton remains in a leadership position despite an overwhelmingly strong lack thereof. Fortunately, this topic will be a small one compared to NCAA Basketball Tournament wrap ups that I’ll be doing on today’s show.

  In case you were wondering, Alcorn State University officially fired first-year head coach Ernest Jones today for reasons many of us couldn’t even pronounce, let alone believe.

  “In a statement released today, Alcorn State University (ASU) announced that head football coach Ernest Jones has been terminated on the grounds of “malfeasance and contumacious conduct.””
