Maybe its a little presumptuous to ask about the Chowan University athletic profile this early into their CIAA affiliation. After all, the Hawks struggled to two wins in football, and just recently captured their first conference win in men’s basketball.

But what would be easy to mock  in the money-making sports of the CIAA would be neglectful of the Hawks’ impact in other conference sports. The Lady Hawks volleyball team recently romped through the conference in route to their first championship and NCAA tournament berth.

If you are a fan of great offense and resilient defense, then you certainly got a treat in Albany State’s 36-21 season-opening victory over Chowan.

The projected champs of the SIAC looked anything but in the opening half of the contest, but buckled-down on defense, forcing five fumbles and three interceptions against the CIAA preseason first-team QB, C.J. Westler.  Sure, Chowan isn’t the best the CIAA has to offer, but they did put up an offensive threat that the Golden Rams will likely compete against throughout the SIAC regular season.

Perhaps Albany State was exposed on pass defense, but there’s nothing you can take away from the Rams’ defensive prowess up front (five sacks) and in the secondary.

The Chowan Hawks have to be encouraged with the output of their offense and defense. Turnovers will kill any team, and the Hawks coughed up six of them. But they did have fewer penalties, held the ball longer, and gained more first downs and third down conversions. It’s clear they can pass, if only their offensive line holds against strong and fast pressure from the edges.

Both teams exposed some weaknesses that the better teams in their respective conferences will exploit throughout the season. But Albany State and Chowan can both have positives that will put them in great positions to win a lot of games in 2009.

The formalities have passed, and Chowan University now joins the CIAA as a full-fledged member, the first non-HBCU to join America’s oldest black college athletic conference.

    What a wonderful day.

It always made sense. Chowan’s size, proximity to other CIAA schools, and decent media coverage will open up new opportunities for rivalries and bolstered attention for the conference. Can’t wait to see the mix of faces at the CIAA Tournament, and how this will change Mr. CIAA’s perspective on color combinations.

With black colleges, there’s usually discussion on which teams can jump out of the historically black college conferences and into a more-recognized mid-major conference (looking in your general direction, FAMU). Chowan and the CIAA came together to make history in collegiate athletics, collaboratively ignoring any sentiments that decried the move.

  • Elizabeth City State Routs Chowan University in Historic CIAA Season Opener

Not that you could find any coverage on it from North Carolina media, but Chowan University opened its inaugural season as a member of the CIAA yesterday at Elizabeth City State University. The result was a 55-3 rout in favor of the Vikings, but the historic contest will have a much further reach in the history books than the record books.

Chowan University is the first traditionally-white institution to join the CIAA, the nation’s oldest athletic conference comprised of historically black colleges and universities. There was much build up prior to the game about Chowan’s move to the CIAA, with the majority of its coverage being positive and appropriately framed.

It’s just a shame that such an historic occasion was not met with matching coverage from the major newspapers or television networks in the region. A look at the Charlotte News and Observer’s CIAA coverage reveals no recap, let alone any human interest coverage.

Perhaps its a good thing that racial divides being broken are diminshing in appeal as lead stories, but a story of any kind covering this historic event would have been nice.
