In two days, Southern senior quarterback Bryant Lee will begin a quest to settle two personal scores, and to take one step closer to a SWAC football championship.

His first step begins in Thursday night’s nationally-televised tussle with Prairie View A&M. In two games against the Panthers, Lee has completed 49-of-84 passes for 482 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He’s 1-1 in those games, and nothing would be better than to go out with a winning record against a PVAMU team which has redefined itself as a conference powerhouse in recent years.

And for as much fun as it will be to watch the quarterback duel between he and PVAMU’s K.J. Black, a far more interesting story line is Lee’s last chance at cementing his status as a SWAC quarterbacking legend.

Often, you hear advocates for black colleges and black college athletics pining for newer and better facilities. To the ignorant ear, it may sound like a bunch of whining and crying about something that has very little to do with the outcome on the field or court.

But for black colleges, the caliber of facilities and resources is crucial to every phase of institutional advancement. It is particularly critical for sports, where recruiting wars are won or lost on how much an athlete can visualize himself working out and playing in front of fans at a glittering arena or gymnasium.

If you don’t believe that having new things means a lot to the teams that can get them, check out this recent article on Southern University; the SWAC’s old guard and their bragging on new additions to Mumford Stadium.

“It motivates us all to do better, ” said senior quarterback Bryant Lee, who prepped at Hahnville. “It even makes me want to lift weights more than before.

“It took such a long time to get this done. We feel like we owe the fans who helped build it and the players who didn’t get to enjoy it, to show them it was all worth it.”

    How ’bout it, Coach Pete?

“You can’t imagine how much of a difference it makes, ” Richardson said. “Our lack of facilities has really impacted our recruiting in the past few years.

“Others started using them in derogatory ways toward our program, and we weren’t able to recruit the athletes we had in the past. Then we had a lot of injuries, and everything started rolling up.”

Southern University had a miraculous late season run in 2008, all the way to the Bayou Classic before bowing out of contention against eventual SWAC champ Grambling State University. But the Jaguars went into their spring game much in the way they exited last season; with significant injuries in key positions.

Of particular note, Jag quarterback Bryant Lee expressed slight concern with the knee that injured early in the Bayou Classic, not with cutting and sudden movements, but with running.

  • The Best Quarterback in Black College Football Is...

…too close to call. If you’re going for wins, Tuskegee’s Jacary Atkinson might be your man. If you are going for talent, Southern’s Bryant Lee won’t let you down.

Should he be a rising star like Hampton’s Herb Bynes? Should he have consistency like Virginia Union’s Lamar Little?

You could make a case for a number of quarterbacks throughout black college football. But if the game is on the line and your team needs an 80 yard drive to win the championship, who are you going to go with?

It’s a not a definitive selection of quarterbacks by a long shot. With Curtis Pulley in the MEAC, Bobby Reid in the SWAC, Curtis Rich in the CIAA and Kisan Flakes in the SIAC, you could nominate a few men for this designation.

But these four have been dependable winners throughout their careers, be they short or long. They’ve played in and won big games, and have the accolades to show it. Talking and discussion is one thing, but the votes will ultimately settle the score.

Right now, who is the best quarterback in black college football?
