Fayetteville State Wins 2009 CIAA Football Championship
JC
It’s no surprise that Fayettevile State reached the CIAA championship game or even that they emerged from Durham as 21-10 victors over Bowie State. What is surprising is that a quarterback who hadn’t played in the second half of the season came into the second-half of the game to lead the Broncos to victory.
There are a few ways you can describe Kenny Phillips’ decision to bring in junior Benjamin Williams for the second half of the championship game after benching him for the entire second half of the regular season. Nonsensical, sporadic and unexpected are a few the ones that immediately come to mind.
But in the end, Williams’ six completions, 87 yards and one touchdown pass validated Phillips’ move, and gave the Broncos a spark against a vaunted Bowie State defense. The Bulldog offense, which had ground out so many close victories over the course of the season, was ineffective in the second half, and gave away two turnovers that led to two second half touchdowns.
Now for the big question: who will Phillips start at quarterback in the playoffs, where the Broncos will face the California (Pa.) in the opening round of the Division II playoffs?

The Coin Don't Lie - Bowie State Advances to CIAA Championship Game
JC
What was almost a reality for the SWAC last year became reality for the CIAA football championship in 2009, as Bowie State University advanced to the conference championship game by way of a three-way coin flip tie breaker.
The accounting firm of Cavanaugh and Nelson administered the coin toss tiebreaker, where the three contending Athletic Directors simultaneously flipped coins; where the Bowie State Interim AD, Arlene Creek, flipped a tail versus two heads tossed by Virginia Union and Elizabeth City State.
Is it just me, or is there a way college football can solve ties without reliance on chance? Why keep track of stats like total scoring offense and defense if you can’t use them to determine which teams are better than others?
If they did, we’d likely be looking at an Elizabeth City State – Fayetteville State championship, which is what CIAA coaches predicted in the preseason. With an average margin of victory of 9.7 points per game on the year, the Vikings are .5 better than the Bulldogs and 1.3 points better than the Panthers.
There are countless other ways you could determine who is a better team between the three, but for as close as they were in 2009, you really can’t be disappointed with the upstart Bulldogs drawing the right side of the coin.

CIAA East Hangs in the Balance

How fitting that representation from the CIAA East in the conference championship game will come down to Virginia Union and Bowie State – two teams picked to finish fifth and seventh respectively in the preseason conference predictions.

Bowie State Upsets Shaw in Prince George's Football Classic
JC
Everything appeared to be holding to form for the Shaw Bears. They forced fumbles and jumped out to an early lead against Bowie State in the Prince George’s Football Classic.
But something strange happened in the second half of the contest. All tied up at 17, the Bulldogs started believing that they indeed had the number one defense in the CIAA, and indeed had a home field advantage playing in it’s back yard. BSU clamped down on the Shaw rushing attack to force a scoreless second half, and the Bears, with very poor special teams play, eventually collapsed in two overtimes in a 31-24 loss – their first on the year.

Former Bowie State Coach Luke D'Alessio is a Fashionista...
JC
Former Bowie State men’s basketball coach Luke D’Alessio was sure to land on his feet after being inexplicably fired by the now departed AD Derek Carter. No one would have guessed that it would be in an entirely different country.
D’Alessio has accepted a job with the University College Cork Blue Demons in Ireland, which makes him the second black college coach to completely leave the country after an unceremonious firing.
Which reminds me, why hasn’t Nickelberry updated his website?
Anyway, the more interesting part of D’Alessio’s move to Ireland is his comments on the difference between the pro and college game.
“That’s one thing I’m looking forward to – it’s all about basketball,” he said. “At the college level, you’re worrying about the kids’ grades, how they dress, keeping them out of trouble, mentoring them.”
Really, coach? How they dress? I know you’re into nice suits and all, but did you really get that deep with the players?
Or was it just an “image” you were trying to protect at BSU? Because I would hate to think that mentoring and keeping young guys on the right track also involved incriminating on their style to settle your own personal issues with black male stereotypes.

The Derek Carter Ultimatum
JC
Saying that Derek Carter has his work cut out for him as athletic director of Delaware State may be an understatement. Carter is the new face of a Hornets program that is at the front of controversy, and near the rear of relevance throughout black college sports nation. -
Bowie State Makes Right Choice with Darrell Brooks
JC
To replace Luke D’Alessio, Bowie State was going to have to look local and high for an appropriate replacement. It was going to need a coach with local ties for recruiting and marketability, someone who had not been a failure at previous stops, and someone who was familiar with the CIAA and the pressures that it brings to each member school competing for the basketball title.
In Derrick Brooks, Bowie State found everything it was looking for.
