It’s one thing to get rid of a guy that was arguing with the head coach, driving fans away, and overall destroying the Jackson State football program.
But its another thing to find his replacement in just over a month.
Jackson State will have a new offensive coordinator by Jan. 1 if athletic director Bob Braddy has his way.
Coach Rick Comegy fired James Woody 10 days ago following a 3-7 season in which JSU mustered just 13.9 points a game, ranking 109th in the nation among Division I-AA programs. Fans had grown frustrated with Woody’s offense over the past two years and it showed in the stands as the team finished with an average attendance of 12,806 for five home games – the second-worst mark in the last 32 years.
I can understand the ambition, because the Tigers have seats to sell up against the threat of the state trying to fold Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State into JSU, while regaining the trust of the diehard fans. But still, seems like Rick Comegy can’t catch a break from the stress of this job – even for Christmas and Kwanzaa.
A month? Really? Notre Dame football probably won’t have a head coach in a month and Jackson State is looking to find an qualified offensive coordinator in that time? Please. Throw in the fact that athletic director Bob Braddy has all but said that the new coordinator likely won’t make as much as departed James Woody’s $96,400 annual salary, and you have the makings of a stalled process.
So is it just me, or is Braddy giving Comegy ultimatums that can’t – or won’t – be met legitimately for a reason?

The troubles with coaches, struggles of players and the angst of fans are all well documented at Jackson State University. And with their tumultuous season finally coming to a close
