• Albany State President Ducks Student Body, Accountability

  There isn’t much leeway for me to tie this to athletics, other than to compare it to other shoddy leadership that is so often present within black college athletic administration. This news comes to us from Albany State University, where the student body has launched protests and town hall forums to find out more information on a recently resigned Vice President of Student Affairs.

  Unfortunately, ASU President Dr. Everette Freeman took the customary, inexcusable way out of the tough questioning from the fired-up Rams.

  Dr. Freeman addressed the students saying he cannot divulge details because it is a personnel matter. He reassured students that everything he does is in the best interest of Albany State and supported in documented evidence.

  Many students weren’t happy with that answer so he asked them to write down their concerns so he could address them to the best of his ability at a later date.

  We expected Albany State to reach the NCAA Division II playoffs, and there was even hope for a shot an SIAC championship in Ram Land.

  Two out of three ain’t bad, unless you’re talking about ASU’s record in their last three games.

  Albany State’s match-up with Fort Valley State in this weekend’s Fountain City Classic is much more than a rivalry – it’s a trap.

  The Golden Rams know exactly what’s at stake for this game. Not just bragging rights over the Wildcats for the next year, but a chance at the SIAC football title. They know Tuskegee controls their own destiny, and that of the Ram title hopes over the next two weekends.

• Tuskegee Beats Albany State - Makes Things Interesting in the SIAC

  Tuskegee fans have paraded in and around my email all night to bring spices and seasoning for this morning’s serving of crow. I knew it would be close, I knew it would be an instant classic. But I never would’ve expected Tuskegee to defeat Albany State 21-19 and position itself for another SIAC conference title.

  The dynasty may be dead, but the talent and timing of the Golden Tigers is alive and well. TU’s final drive was a slick balance of running and passing – deft playcalling that resulted in 90 yards in eight plays in just one minute and 28 seconds. This without their starting quarterback Jeremy Williams, who left the game in the second half with an injury.

• Can Tuskegee Beat Albany State?

  You could say that everything FAMU-SCSU was to the MEAC, Albany State-Tuskegee may be to the SIAC. There is no question that the Rams are on the path that Tuskegee tread just a season ago; a dominant quarterback leads a dynamic offense paired with an opportunistic defense. The SIAC suffers as a result, but this time, the Division II playoff picture will be shaped by their inclusion.

  But there’s just one thing. ASU has to beat Tuskegee to take one step closer to a perfect reality.

• Albany State - Go Ahead and Crown Them

  There have been few challenges posed to the Albany State Rams football team this season, but at every stop, the Rams have made their opponents appear less than worthy.

  Such was the case with the Miles Bears, a formidable team that ASU made to look subpar on their own field yesterday. More than just a 31-7 victory, the Rams served notice that, even with the toughest portion of their schedule ahead of them, there will be no catching them.

• Albany State and Chowan Find Room For Improvement

  If you are a fan of great offense and resilient defense, then you certainly got a treat in Albany State’s 36-21 season-opening victory over Chowan.

  The projected champs of the SIAC looked anything but in the opening half of the contest, but buckled-down on defense, forcing five fumbles and three interceptions against the CIAA preseason first-team QB, C.J. Westler.  Sure, Chowan isn’t the best the CIAA has to offer, but they did put up an offensive threat that the Golden Rams will likely compete against throughout the SIAC regular season.

  Perhaps Albany State was exposed on pass defense, but there’s nothing you can take away from the Rams’ defensive prowess up front (five sacks) and in the secondary.

  The Chowan Hawks have to be encouraged with the output of their offense and defense. Turnovers will kill any team, and the Hawks coughed up six of them. But they did have fewer penalties, held the ball longer, and gained more first downs and third down conversions. It’s clear they can pass, if only their offensive line holds against strong and fast pressure from the edges.

  Both teams exposed some weaknesses that the better teams in their respective conferences will exploit throughout the season. But Albany State and Chowan can both have positives that will put them in great positions to win a lot of games in 2009.

• More on the Fort Valley State Financial Aid Fiasco

  The mess continues with the story of two Fort Valley State football recruits leaving the school for Albany State, citing a discrepancy with their athletic scholarships.

  Now we find out that somebody is lying. New reports from the Albany Herald have Wildcat coach Donald Pittman saying that on scholarship was in place  and the other was cleared the morning after their August 2 departure from FVSU.

  Pittman added he is not releasing Westover’s Greg Green and Dougherty’s Felton Walls from their scholarships that would have at least allowed Green to play on the Rams’ football team this season. The Wildcats’ coach said Green had his scholarship in the system all along, and Walls’ scholarship worked its way into the system the morning the two left the team on Aug. 2.

• Financial Aid Fiasco Costs Fort Valley State Two Football Recruits

  Now this is an all-too familiar story that is far-too exclusive to black colleges. Fort Valley State University never recorded football recruits Felton Walls and Greg Green as scholarship recipients for this academic year, and as a result, the two have returned to their hometowns in Albany, GA, hoping to sign with Albany State University.

  This is a blunder of epic proportions, and just one of the many examples that steer high caliber athletes away from HBCUs. But there is another angle to this story that casts FVSU in a poorer light.

  If a financial aid office can screw up awards for athletes, who at most institutions, work exclusively with a specific aid counselor and separate from the rest of the student body, imagine the troubles that non-athletes must encounter at this school. If you can’t take care of the students who make you money through sports, God help those students who have to negotiate long lines and paperwork without the athletic brand supporting them.

• How Not To Treat Your SID - Albany State's Edythe Bradley

  In no way is this meant to disrespect Edythe Bradley or the work she’s putting in with the Albany State athletic department. But truth be told, this is too much – even for a Superwoman like Bradley.

  She works as many as 60 hours a week during football season, and 50 during basketball season in the spring. From compiling statistics to generating press releases to even completing other odds and ends for the school, Bradley – a Camilla native who graduated from Florida A&M – has found her niche.

  I can understand that the Golden Rams may have shoestring tight athletic budgets – most schools, HBCU and otherwise, do. But there’s a fine line between commitment and crazy, and it seems that Bradley is toeing that line ever so gingerly.

  60 hours a week, files and tasks with no end, and ASU doesn’t see fit to provide any assistance? I guess it’s not unusual for a department that has multiple people filling multiple coaching roles, but gracious, there has to be more relief in life than two weeks of vacation and a daily lunch break.

  Ram fans, if you care about your program and the sanity of Edythe Bradley, consider giving to the ASU Annual Fund today.

  For real. Help this woman catch a break.
