Here’s a list of the top 30 most-attended black college football games in 2008. In the 12 games with attendance of 30,000 or more, 11 of the contests featured at least one team from the SWAC. Not a big surprise, considering that the SWAC regularly is among the national leaders in college football attendance.

But here’s where it gets a little shaky. The MEAC’s highest-attended contest – and number two on the list – was the Florida Classic between Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman. After that, you don’t find another all-MEAC contest on the list until number 14, the Battle of the Bay between Hampton and Norfolk State.

  • More Exciting: Grambling vs. Alabama A&M or Halftime Battle of the Bands?

Alabama A&M’s homecoming is this weekend, and it will be a battle of the Eastern-division leading Bulldogs against the Western-division leading Grambling State Tigers. The game could be a lot closer than the experts predict, and there’s a real possibility that the solid A&M offense could overwhelm the stiff Tiger defense.

But are you more amped for that, or the Battle of the Bands that’s going down at halftime? A&M is promoting the battle more than the game itself, so it would appear that the Marching Maroon and White might have something tight cooked up for big game.

I’m more into games than band battles, but I do look forward to them. Unfortunately, I’ve never had the privilege of hearing A&M’s band live. Anybody care to enlighten me on if they can keep up with the world-famous Tiger band?

You can get the discussion jumped off here, or in the Band section of the forums, but one way or another, I needs to know who’s going to kill it this weekend.

On the field, and in the stands.

  • Alabama A&M Soccer Streak Ends at Eight

The Alabama A&M men’s soccer team is not only among the best in the SWAC, but among the best collegiate teams in the country. Unfortunately, their winning streak of 8 straight matches came to an end yesterday with a 4-1 defeat at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

The Bulldogs racked up six wins and two ties in their last eight games, and were leading by the nation’s leading goal scorer, MfanaFuthi Bhembe. With the lone score against UAB, Bhembe is the first player in Division I to score 11 goals this season.

  • Tuskegee Marches On With Win Over Alabama A&M

The Golden Tigers of Tuskegee ran their winning streak to 21 games with a 34-24 victory over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs in the 25th Annual Circle City Classic last Saturday. Much like last week’s game of the week between FAMU and Tennessee State, the dual threat of a running and passing quarterback was the key to the game, as TU’s Jacary Atkinson rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 2-4 on the season, but hope maintains for A&M, as they will begin the rest of their conference schedule this Saturday with a home game against Grambling.

There is not much analysis that can be offered about why Tuskegee won, because it’s all they have done for the past two seasons. If you want to know why Alabama A&M lost, its likely because they were too balanced on offense.

Unlike Tuskegee, who found that the way to success was with a ground attack of 19 more rushing attempts than passing attempts, the Bulldogs committed to running the football when it was their air attack that appeared to be key. A&M quarterback Gerald Stockdale threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but rushed for only 132 yards on 37 carries.

Hindsight is 20/20, but it appears the Bulldogs might have been better served with using the pass to set up the run in the first half, rather than scheming the opposite against a high scoring offense like Tuskegee.

A match-up with North Carolina A&T in the opening round match of the Alabama State invitational worked wonders for the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, as they got their first win of the season against the Aggies, 3-1.

Not only was it their first victory of the season, but it was the first time the Bulldogs had won a set in 2008. Freshman Karensa Beckford led the Bulldogs with 13 kills.

  • Rough Opening Weekend For CIAA, SWAC Football

Opening weekend for teams in the CIAA and the SWAC conferences were unkind on the gridiron. Both preseason conference favorites had major out-of-conference games to open their 2008 campaigns, and both emerged with losses that are sure to make for bruising practices this week.

Shaw University, the surprising 2007 CIAA football champions faced off against the Albany State Rams, one of the SIAC’s best teams in 2007. The Rams offense proved too much for the Bears, as ASU pulled away in the second half and held for a 27-10 home victory.  The Bears had no problem establishing the run against the Rams, but were absolutely stifled through the air, completing only eight passes on the game for 50 yards. On the day, neither team managed more than 200 yards of total offense, but Albany State’s steady passing attack made the difference, as juniors Kissan Flakes and A.J. McKenna combined for 144 yards through the air and two touchdowns.

Shaw would not be the only CIAA team to finish the weekend in the loss column, as only three teams – Lincoln (Pa.), Bowie State and St. Augustine’s earned wins. For the SWAC, Prairie View A&M was the only team to emerge victorious with a win over conference rival Texas Southern.

In fact, of the four SWAC teams receiving first-place votes in the preseason predictions, Jackson State was the only team to lose by a single-digit margin on opening weekend. Alabama A&M, Grambling State and Southern all suffered losses of 20 points or more.

  • Fan Day Offensive Explosion Could Signal Trouble for Alabama A&M Defense

    Tags: Alabama A&M

You would think that Alabama A&M’s offensive outburst in their last preseason scrimmage would be a good sign for the Bulldogs. 56 points, more than 400 yards of total offense, and several touchdowns through the air for new starting quarterback Kevin Atkins.

But what does that mean for the A&M defense? It may be party time for the Bulldog offense, but is the party shutting down for a defensive unit that was middle of the road in SWAC total defense in 2007?

While they were okay against the run, they were paltry against the pass, allowing 216 yards per game and 19 touchdowns on the year. It’s not a good look in your final scrimmage to allow that kind of work from your own offense, whom you see every day and whose plays you work from in meetings and film.

The Bulldog faithful might be happy now, but come the regular season, will opposing offenses take the bark away from the defense?

  • Alabama A&M Volleyball Set For Another Championship Season

    JC 10:51 am on July 23, 2008 | 0 Permalink | Log in to leave a Comment
    Tags: Alabama A&M, ,

I have to admit, I haven’t been the strongest follower of SWAC volleyball, but I do know that Alabama A&M is the cream of the crop in the conference.

Since 2000, the Bulldogs have won all but one of the conference volleyball championships, making them one of the most sucessful Division I programs in that time period. Going into the 2008 season, the Bulldogs will feature the 2007 SWAC Coach of the Year in Nedra Brown, a three-time all-conference player in Brittani Lewis and the 2007 SWAC Newcomer of the Year Natalie Rodriguez.

Prairie View A&M and Mississippi Valley State figure to be the primary challengers to the Bulldogs run in 2008, but after 10 years of success, there’s no reason to change your bets on the Bulldogs just yet.
