• Southern's Juamorris Stewart to Play in Texas vs. Nation All-Star Game

  Southern receiver Juamorris Stewart will participate in the upcoming Texas vs. the Nation All-Star Challenge in February, earning yet another showcase opportunity to impress scouts in preparation for a pro career.

  Stewart recently finished what many consider to be the greatest career of all-time as a Jaguar receiver. He is the school’s all-time leader in receptions (201), and second all-time in career receiving yards with 2,668. There were times where his play was overshadowed by that of SU quarterback Bryant Lee, but along with Thomas Harris of Alabama A&M, Stewart stands to earn a lot of attention through all-star games and workouts leading up to the combine.

  Harris and Stewart are ranked 25th and 33rd nationally among the 2010 NFL Draft class, respectively.

  Before I get into it, be sure to check out the banner to your left on Artur Davis’ Magic City Classic ticket giveaway….and get involved in the campaign, Alabama.

  Now for the football. The assumption crafted over the last few years is that the SWAC Eastern Division is commonly Jackson State territory. No matter how bad they are out-of-conference or out-of-division, the East is JSU’s to lose.

• The Quotable HBCU Sports Blog

  The Circle City Classic is now in the books, as Alabama A&M made second-half light work of Tuskegee, 35-15.

  But in yesterday’s preview of the Circle City Classic in the Indianapolis Star, yours truly had a quote in the story. Hopefully, I did as much good in talking up black college football as black college football alums Robert Mathis and Antoine Bethea.

  Let me know what you think about my quote, and the story. The story, in my opinion, is really spot on in capturing what is exciting and appealing about black college football. Cheers to Jeff Rabjhons for putting the work in on the story and the history of black college football classics.

• Money Coming Up Funny With Alabama A&M Athletics?

  Alabama A&M University is in the midst of a significant audit process that has revealed several instances of financial impropriety and mistakes. They have a new president, so hopefully, the university can rebound without much backlash from state lawmakers.

  Interestingly enough, Bulldog athletics are a major player in the scrutiny over the university’s funds. Included in the report to the Alabama legislation;

  During the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2007, Ticketmaster reports were not retained from football game day sales. That meant that revenue could not be checked for completeness, the auditors said.

  “Also, cashier ticket sales sheets were not properly maintained,” it said. “Several mistakes were noted concerning how many tickets were issued to cashiers and how many tickets were returned.”

  Deposits for the Oct. 14, 2006, A&M game against Stillman College showed that each cashier’s deposit made on game day was either over or short.

  “These amounts netted to an overage of $2,415 for the game,” the report said. “There was no documentation as to what caused the overage.”

• Will the Alabama A&M Defense Step Up in 2009?

  The Alabama A&M Bulldogs should have no problem scoring in the SWAC this season. Most of the offensive starters from the Bulldogs third-ranked unit will return, anxious for a chance to improve the stock of a team that could’ve and should’ve competed for the SWAC title last season.

  Unfortunately, the Bulldogs’ championship aspirations don’t begin with the offense. Their defense is what caused the team a subpar 5-7 campaign in 2008, and will be their primary key to success in 2009.

  The Bulldogs allowed more than 30 points in five of their seven losses, but scored 30 points or more only twice. All-SWAC first-team member Jeremy Maddox is their best returning defensive player, but questions linger about his academic eligibility.

  Next to Maddox, there are virtually no defenders of note to shoulder hopes for challenging Jackson State for the Eastern division title.

  The Bulldogs’ primary objective is to improve their defensive effort at home, but with Hampton and Jacksonville State visiting Louis Crews Stadium in the first two home games of the season, the Dogs’ could very well be staring at the same kind of early season slide that hindered their progress last season.

• Alabama A&M Boosters Break Off Big Check for Bulldog Sports

  An official group charged with raising funds for Alabama A&M athletics recently presented a check to the department for $40,000, to go towards operation costs and the funding of athletic scholarships.

  The Bulldog Club shows that economic hard times usually require harder work to accomplish great things. After all, you can’t complain if you have let your money match the attention that you pay.

  Your run to a MEAC championship and into the field of 65 in the NCAA Tournament with 20 losses has inspired Texas Southern, Alabama A&M, Mississippi Valley State and Southern. Even though those programs have a combined 30-88 overall record, they believe it is possible to run the table in the SWAC .

• Roger Totten Headed to Alabama State

  Roger Totten, an experienced offensive strategist and key to the Alabama A&M fourth-ranked passing attack in 2008 has accepted an assistant head coaching position under Reggie Barlow at Alabama State University. Totten will also serve as receivers coach.
