• Southern Dismisses Top Scorer Earnest Jones

  It isn’t a story that has made the rounds in black college sports, and why should it? The SWAC cares not for basketball, after all. But it is a pretty big deal that Southern dismissed its leading scorer Earnest Jones earlier this week, and coach Rob Spivery is mum on the reasoning.

  Spivery said he dismissed Earnest Jones, the team’s leading scorer, after the team’s loss at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday night.

  Spivery said he sent Jones home Sunday, citing “behavior that was not …”

  He took a long pause.

  “Not acceptable. That’s as good a word as any,” Spivery said, declining to elaborate.

• Delaware State Deepens Title IX Violations with Athletic Cuts

  What began in the comments on the initial post concerning Delaware State’s athletic cuts has evolved into a small scale investigation regarding gender equity. And the results aren’t pretty for the Hornets’ efforts to foster gender equity in athletics.

  With the recent cuts to men’s tennis and women’s equestrian, sports with six and 20 scholarships respectively, DSU has furthered placed itself in violation of Title IX compliance mandates, which were starkly apparent prior to the cuts. The HBCU Sports Blog was lucky enough to solicit a response from Erin Buzuvis, an associate professor of law at the Western New England College and a co-founding contributor on the Title IX Blog,  a site dedicated to monitoring and educating about Title IX compliance. • Fort Valley State Athletic Director Wilson Gosier to Retire

  Fort Valley State University has just announced that Athletic Director Wilson Gosier will retire in June of this year. His 18-month tenure as AD began in January of 2009 after more than 30 years as a student and administrator with FVSU.

• Morgan State Reaches Agreement to Face Maryland in Football this Fall

  While the agreement has not yet reached the phase of contract signing, Morgan State University and the University of Maryland have tentatively agreed to meet in a non-conference football game this Fall, the first ever gridiron meeting between the two schools.

  Reached by The Baltimore Sun, two Morgan athletic officials and a Maryland official said Tuesday that an agreement had been reached in principle and that details could be completed soon. They all said the game would be played in September.

    Just our luck….Maybe if this game was played last year when the Terps were down we would have a chance. Then again we got thrashed by Akron last year, a team who was in the basement of their FBS conf.

• Monte Coleman Adds Three to UAPB Football Coaching Staff

  The University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff yesterday announced the hiring of three new assistant football coaches. Jerry Mack will serve as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Vernon Dean will coach the linebackers, and Dennis Winston will coach the defensive line.

• Winston-Salem State Extends Bobby Collins for Three Years

  I know this is a couple of days late, but Winston-Salem State University has extended the contract of head men’s basketball coach Bobby Collins. With an overall 29-73 record, some fans may think that his retention is a poor investment on the Rams program looking to reestablish dominance in the CIAA.

  Barbara Pierre, a record-breaking sprinter for St. Augustine’s College was featured on an ESPN.com article detailing athlete connections to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. The 2008 Olympian, who recently ran an unofficial national record 7.25 in the 60-meter dash at last week’s Tar Heel Invitational, reflected on her family living in the city, and how Haiti will rebuild.

  “Haitians, they’re very hard-working people. They’re going to get back on their feet. I just don’t know how long,” she said.

  “Haiti is a third-world country. Look what happened to [people in] New Orleans. They’re in the States, and look how long it took for them to get back up. It’s going to take a long time. They don’t really have the tools we have, the tools to dig up bricks and pull people out. They have to do that with their hands.”

• Howard Basketball on the Come Up?

  They may have back-doored their athletic director into position, but perhaps it worked out for the best. The Howard Bison men’s basketball team, 5-14 overall with an abysmal 11 losses by 15 points or more, is 4-1 in the MEAC and just one game out of first place behind Morgan State.

• Is Prairie View Becoming the SWAC Money Maker?

  Prairie View has long shouldered the earned burden of being a black college doormat. If there was a homecoming to be won, a basketball scoreboard to be lit up, or a fan base to mock, the Panthers were your ticket to instant gratification.

  But not only are those days gone, they are becoming a fast-fading memory amidst PVAMU’s current stretch of SWAC dominance.
