They may have back-doored their athletic director into position, but perhaps it worked out for the best. The Howard Bison men’s basketball team, 5-14 overall with an abysmal 11 losses by 15 points or more, is 4-1 in the MEAC and just one game out of first place behind Morgan State.
I know; hard to believe.
The Bison have knocked off head-scratchingly bad North Carolina A&T, Coppin State and Norfolk State, but have quality wins against Navy and Hampton. They are led by super sophomore guard Calvin Thompson and freshman forward Mike Phillips, who combine to average 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. You have to assume that their youth won’t serve them well in the latter stages of the season, but they just may get enough wins under their belt to earn first round reprieve in the MEAC basketball tournament.
It wasn’t that long ago that I was calling for the firing of Gil Jackson. And that still may be warranted given that the Bison have yet to win more than nine games since his arrival in 2005. But they are looking good so far, and with four consecutive road games to close out January and halve out February, they’ll need to look extra good to keep pace with Bethune-Cookman and Delaware State in the pursuit of the regular season title.
