That may seem to many to be a reaching premise, but before you roll your sleeves up, keep in mind that the Saint Augustine’s Falcons have quietly flown under the radar as one of the CIAA’s most consistent programs.

And this may be their year to capture a conference title.

The Falcons have posted 19 wins in four of their last six seasons, and coming into 2009, they are the owners of the conference’s longest winning streak; an eight-game beauty that was ended last weekend at home against Bowie State.

They are the only team in the CIAA without a loss on the road, and the Falcons are ranked 10th in three point shooting and 27th in opponent three-point field goal percentage. Nationally.

Throw into the mix a CIAA Player of the Year candidate in junior forward Hayward Fain and senior guard Chris Jordan, and there’s a balance the Falcons have struck that the rest of the CIAA may find difficult to undo before the last week in February.

Tomorrow will tell the tale on how the rest of the country feels about Saint Augustine’s, but it’s clear that the Falcons are reaching for a breakthrough almost no one saw coming.
