Winston-Salem State University has named former Fayetteville State offensive coordinator Connell Maynor it’s head football coach. Maynor, a former Ram football player, also served as an offensive coordinator for the AFL championship-winning Philadelphia Soul from 2006-2008.

Maynor has strong ties to the WSSU program, an extensive track record as a play-caller and developer of offensive talent, and most importantly, an allegiance to new athletic director Bill Hayes. Indeed, in an off-season where the black college coaching pool has never been quite this deep, the Rams have made the first significant splash.

What makes this an impressive hire beyond his credentials, is that WSSU managed to get one of the few guys with professional football ties that also will be well regarded in CIAA and Winston-Salem supporter and media circles. People know Maynor, and unlike a coach like Pete Richardson or Alvin Wyatt, Maynor comes back to WSSU with a championship in tow; not an acrimonious dismissal.

It’s the second time in less than two years that Bill Hayes has shown the magic touch for hiring coaches, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it paid similar dividends to those earned in Tallahassee with the hiring of Joe Taylor.
