The quarterback who helped Jerry Rice onto the national stage as a receiver for Mississippi Valley State couldn’t find the same success as a coach at his alma mater. Willie Totten has resigned as the Delta Devils head coach, but will remain with the university in a staff and possibly fundraising capacity.

Totten’s eighth season at the helm of the Delta Devils program finished unceremoniously at the bottom of the SWAC standings. Rarely did MVSU challenge any conference contenders, and were routed regularly throughout the regular season.

Not sure if he was forced out, fed up, or a combination of the both to resign the position so suddenly. I never figured MVSU to be the hot bed of alumni and fan angst for losing seasons, especially not in relation to the publicly ornery Jackson State crowd, so I tend to think this was of his own choice.  A 31-57 overall record will do that to a man; especially when improvement and resources to ensure improvement are not readily apparent for the near future.
