If the Southern Jaguars were going to get a Grambling man to serve the university in a football capacity, they can find no better man for no larger a capacity. News has broken that Williams, currently director of pro personnel for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has spoken with SU athletic director Greg LaFleur about the vacant head football coaching position.
With his interview, Southern has officially spoken with Redskins’ running back coach Stump Mitchell, Prairie View defensive coordinator Heishma Northern and Shaw head football coach Darrell Asberry. And given SU’s track record of championship-winning coaches, this list of black college football coaching luminaries is not surprising.
LaFleur has gone on record saying that he would like to have a coach in place by Jan 1., extending his previously established deadline of Christmas. Given these names, and the new developments that assistant coaches’ salaries and other resources may be an issue, I would guess that the next four days might be a stretch as well.
