I’ve gotten a few emails over the weekend about the Bayou Classic, most folks asking why I didn’t jump all over it this weekend. Between going to buy a new car and spending a great Thanksgiving with my wife and new baby, my coverage of the Classic was limited with explanation.

But I am interested in finding out from those who went, or those who watched it, was it the same Bayou Classic from year’s past? With no meaningful divisional or championship ramifications, was the party and the purpose of the Bayou Classic still the same?

Part of me, having not been in N.O. for the event says yes. Once a cultural staple, always a cultural staple. The Bayou Classic is a national event for black college football enthusiasts, and the city of New Orleans is the perfect place to eat good, drink hard and cheer passionately for two of black college football’s programs of record.

But, these same programs usually turn the Superdome into the Western Division championship in the Bayou Classic, and with the rise of Prairie View, was some of the edge missing off of the game itself?

I’m sure it was a good look for Grambling fans to leave the Classic, satisfied with the stuffing they kicked out of Southern. I just wonder was it the same old feeling that gets fans nice and full every year in the Big Easy?
