Prairie View or North Carolina A&T, I would’ve expected. But the FAMU Lady Rattlers taking the 2009 WNIT champs to overtime and beating them on the road? Beyond impressive.
I guess this is to be expected from a team that was a poor first-half removed from the MEAC basketball title game last season as a seventh seed. Year two under coach Ledawn Gibson may prove to be a complete renaissance for the Lady Rattlers. Picked to finish seventh in the preseason by conference coaches and with only two players named to the all-conference second-team, FAMU has already secured one of the biggest upsets of the year for the conference – men’s or women’s.
You wonder how heavy they will lean on guards Deidra Jones and Antonia Bennett, but if they get regular contributions from freshman Tameka McKelton, I fully expect FAMU to challenge Morgan State for the fourth seed in the conference tournament.
