Rumors have been going around for some days about the pending firing of Tennessee State head football coach James Webster. My sources haven’t divulged that anything would happen during the season, but that a review would certainly be in order immediately following the season.

As of this writing, he’s still the head coach.

But all signs point to Webster being on his way out, and if it is to be sooner than later, its surprising that athletic department officials would be so sloppy as to pinpoint an exact date – as in before this Saturday’s game against Austin Peay. The school hasn’t denied an intention to fire him, or claimed a desire to keep him beyond this season; it’s basically a big mess.

If you want to fire the man, fire him; his record at TSU warrants it. But don’t put it out to employees and staff that your intention is to fire him and leave the termination date open-ended. That’s not fair for Webster’s pending job search, and certainly is not helpful to the integrity of the department snitches who dropped the dime.
