It’s universally known that Coppin State head men’s basketball coach Fang Mitchell is a maniac when it comes to out-of-conference scheduling. Wherever there’s a willing buyer, he’s selling his Eagles out for the cash; no matter how far the destination or how overmatched his team may be.
So it’s slightly humorous that Mitchell broke the mold on his out-of-conference attitude in a loss to the Colorado Buffaloes last night. CU defeated Coppin 82-58 in Boulder; a blowout by any measure but certainly not humiliating and certainly outside of what anyone expected to happen.
Anyone but Coach Mitchell.
“They didn’t come out with any type of intensity,” Coppin State coach Fang Mitchell said of his team. “You’ve got to credit Jeff’s team for coming out ready to play, ready to take on the challenge. I have some talent. I just need to make a few attitude adjustments.”
Really, coach? So the travel over multiple time zones and playing a mile or so above sea level had nothing to do with it? No intensity?
I could understand if he pointed to the team trying to identify a scoring identity in its first year without all-time leading scorer and Australian league standout Tywain McKee, but no, intensity has to be the problem.
But not with the Eagles players. With the coach.
