So there’s two ways this can go for Alphonza Kee and his Fayetteville State Broncos men’s basketball program; they can be men and buy into the new direction, or create controversy and shut down on him.
The Broncos have a curfew now – everyone in their rooms by midnight. There’s mandatory study hall that some players have to attend twice daily and the six-minute mile time everyone had to post before they’d be allowed to start preseason practice.
And every day when they arrive at Capel Arena for practice, they’re greeting by a schedule on the locker room door detailing to the minute the areas of emphasis for that workout.
So what are the early returns from the players?
“Maybe last year I would have rolled my eyes at it, or would have been upset,” (junior guard Ariel) Robinson said. “But now I’m older and more mature. I see these changes as a cause and a goal. The goal is to have a great season and win the CIAA championship. So we’re down with the cause, you could say.”
It certainly wouldn’t be a bad thing for FSU to be competitive among the Carolina CIAA schools. With all of the senior talent lost between Johnson C. Smith and St. Augustine’s, the Western division could be the most wide open division in 2009-10.
