Theo Smalling, a senior forward for the Hampton University men’s basketball team, is in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen in an accidental shooting on Saturday morning.
Paula Ensley, spokeswoman for the Hampton Police Department, said Smalling was in a parking lot on West Mercury Boulevard with 21-year-old Dominique Devon Smith when Smith “mishandled a firearm and accidentally shot” Smalling.
The athletic department has issued an official statement on Smalling confirming his condition, hours after several posts on Twitter rumored that Smalling had died of the injuries.
