When you read the outward comments of Jackson State athletic director Bob Braddy and head football coach Rick Comegy, the answer would seem to be a resounding “yes.” The Tigers are looking to add an 11th game to their schedule, and Henry Frazier III and the PVAMU Panthers desperately want to fill it.
“Our schedule is tough right now,” Comegy said. “We’ll probably wind up leaving it how it is and move on.
“We’ve got a schedule set and already built it into what we’re trying to do. To make any changes this late, I just don’t think it’s the way to do business. My mind right now is focused on the season.”
Part of me wants to believe that Jackson State truly has formulated a plan for this season, and that adding Prairie View wouldn’t make sense. On the other hand, that’s total bull. If Mississippi State were trying to add a game for guaranteed money, that wouldn’t be an issue, and everybody knows it.
The writing on the wall seems to be that Jackson State, a recent SWAC champion who still hasn’t addressed the problems that plagued them throughout their runner-up campaign of 2008, may not want any parts of the up and coming Panthers in 2009. Panthers own prime real estate on the 2009 all-SWAC pre-season first team, while the Tigers are a second-team dream.
You know, maybe it’s more smarts than fear on JSU’s part…
