James Woody, offensive coordinator for the Jackson State Tigers football team has been suspended five days without pay, according to a story in the Clarion-Ledger. Head coach Rick Comegy and JSU athletic director Bob Braddy have not commented on the matter, but rumors around the campus describe a heated meeting between Comegy and Woody earlier this week as a possible reason for the suspension.
Woody has been a favorite target of Tiger football fans since his arrival at JSU, as loyalists often question his play calling and off-the-field demeanor. But despite the hatred from the JSU faithful, Woody’s offensive numbers have regularly been tops in the SWAC.
From an outside perspective, this is just a symptom of what happens when an elite black college football team does not win a conference title. Comegy is a defensive guy, and it’s likely they have clashed on philosophy or lack of execution many times leading up to this boiling point.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Woody is gone before the start of the season.
