George White, a former head coach at the Division III level and assistant at number of Division II schools has been named the new head coach of the Virginia State University men’s basketball program. White comes to Petersburg from Stanford, where he served as director of external relations for the men’s basketball team.
This is a bit of a toss up for the Trojans. George White is a guy with experience at the Division II level, and is fresh out of a position where marketing and community relations were the focus of his job. On the other hand, he only posted one winning season as the head coach at Ursinus from 1994-2000. Hopefully, VSU gives White a few resources so that he can play to his marketing and branding strengths and build upon the solid recruiting pipeline established by ousted coach Tony Collins.
There are no preliminary reports of new staff coming in, but it will be interesting to see the style of basketball that the Trojans adopt under White. In his final season at Ursinus, the Bears regularly scored in the mid-70s to low 80s; just slightly above the offensive output of the Torjans this season as the third best scoring unit in the CIAA.
