I don’t know what the deal is with Duer Sharp, but cleaning house and taking names seems to be his M.O. as commissioner of the SWAC. Reports have been confirmed that he fired virtually half of the administrative staff last week, including his Associate Commissioner Director of Championships, Director of Finance, and Director of Media Relations.
And as I said on the show last night, it’s not a good look to be looking for employees when you have a big basketball tournament coming up in a few months.
The grand total of firings for Sharp since he took the postion in January of 2008 is eight. The conference has seemed to move on without any real hiccups, so more power to him. I’m always advocating for accountability, and if these folks were’nt on their jobs, then he’s right to get some folks in that can grow the SWAC brand.
But if they were actually good people for the conference and its member schools, and this is just fallout from a major power trip, then Heaven help the SWAC from folding around its commisioner and what could be a brand-destroying ego.
UPDATE – TSPNSports.com is at the forefront of this story with some behind-the-scenes opinion on just how crazy Duer Sharp really is.
