Winston-Salem State University has extended the contract of head football coach Kermit Blount, which, upon review of the university’s Board of Trustees, will keep the school’s all-time winningest coach in town until 2015.
The Rams’ struggles in transitioning to the MEAC and FCS competition are well-documented, but they did get wins over Howard, Hampton and Delaware State last season. Considering the financial aspects of moving from Division II to the FCS, the Rams appear to be doing just fine.
Which is why WSSU Athletic Director Chico Caldwell may have felt compelled to stick it to North Carolina A&T, who has yielded one of the worst football records in the country over the past three seasons. Caldwell revealed and Blount confirmed that A&T sought permission to speak with Blount about their head coaching vacancy, but that no formal talks ever developed.
“I’m not one of those who try to deny coaches an opportunity if there’s one there.”I think since I’ve been here, (A&T) has had three or four head coaches and two ADs,” Caldwell said.
Okay, Chico. Tell them another reason why Coach Bibbs is the best thing going at A&T these days.
