The Oregon State Beavers will travel across the country to face Howard University this Friday night. And while it’s rare that a power conference team travels to meet a black college mid-major, anticipation surrounding the game is not for the chance at an early-season upset for the Bison.

But for the chance at catching President-elect Barack Obama and future first lady Michelle Obama in the crowd.

Craig Robinson, head coach of the Oregon State men’s basketball team, is the brother of Michelle Obama, and with the Obama’s recent arrival in Washington to prepare for the presidential transition, it’s possible that the first couple will take the opportunity to see their brother in action against a Bison team looking for a major upset opportunity to put the program on the national map.

It would be tremendous for the Obamas to take in a black college game, and even more tremendous if they actually stuck around past halftime of what could be a lopsided contest. Students are excited, and the program can benefit from the exposure of this game alone.

After all, if any men’s basketball program could use an injection of “Yes We Can” into its culture, it’s the Bison.
