The Golden Tigers of Tuskegee ran their winning streak to 21 games with a 34-24 victory over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs in the 25th Annual Circle City Classic last Saturday. Much like last week’s game of the week between FAMU and Tennessee State, the dual threat of a running and passing quarterback was the key to the game, as TU’s Jacary Atkinson rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 2-4 on the season, but hope maintains for A&M, as they will begin the rest of their conference schedule this Saturday with a home game against Grambling.
There is not much analysis that can be offered about why Tuskegee won, because it’s all they have done for the past two seasons. If you want to know why Alabama A&M lost, its likely because they were too balanced on offense.
Unlike Tuskegee, who found that the way to success was with a ground attack of 19 more rushing attempts than passing attempts, the Bulldogs committed to running the football when it was their air attack that appeared to be key. A&M quarterback Gerald Stockdale threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but rushed for only 132 yards on 37 carries.
Hindsight is 20/20, but it appears the Bulldogs might have been better served with using the pass to set up the run in the first half, rather than scheming the opposite against a high scoring offense like Tuskegee.
