Jackson State head football coach Rick Comegy is committed to running the football, but others think the Tigers’ success will come through the air. The Tigers’ defensive line has shown it has the potential to be among the SWAC’s best.

So with two weeks remaining before a opening season showdown with Hampton, what’s the link between these two ingredients for a successful football season?

The struggles of the offensive line.

With a rotating lineup almost everyday in practice, Jackson State has made incremental improvement throughout the summer with its offensive linemen. Their starting center was lost to academic ineligibility, and good plays have come at a premium for the unit.

So it’s hard to gauge whether the defensive front is as good as advertised, or if the O-line is that offensive.

“Some days some guys go out there and display great then some days…,” coach Rick Comegy said. “We just want to evaluate consistency. Play the guys who are most consistent.

Time will tell, but if Hampton exploits the inconsistency of the offensive line in this year’s MEAC/SWAC Challenge, it will be a blueprint for disaster for the SWAC preseason championship favorites.
