Unless a hurricane is coming, you can count on SWAC football fans showing up at home games.
In the 30 years since the introduction of the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-AA), the SWAC led the nation in attendance. Only Hurricane Katrina stopped it from being 30 straight seasons, and I’m willing to bet there were a few blue and gold and black and gold rafts on the rising waters during that tumultuous time.
In total, the SWAC placed five teams in the nation’s top 30 schools for attendance, with Southern and Jackson State placing in the top 20. The University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff and Grambling State placed 23rd and 24th, while Alabama State place 26th.
More than 800,000 fans attended SWAC home games in 2007, confirming that if you sell grills, liquor, barbecue sauce or meat products in the Gulf Coast, you’ll be a millionaire in less than two years.
